Restorative Dentistry
Tooth filling
During the procedure, our dentist will drill out the decay and fill up the hole with a filling. Most types of tooth fillings can be completed in a single visit to the dentist’s office. A filling helps to restore a tooth damaged by decay to its normal function and shape, and helps prevent further decay by eliminating areas where bacteria can enter the tooth.
Baby Root canals
A cavity that involves the nerve (pulp) of the tooth may cause a child to experience intense pain. When the nerve of the tooth is infected, it must be treated to restore the child to good dental health. A pediatric root canal procedure is referred to as a “pulpotomy.” The purpose of this treatment is to maintain the vitality of the affected tooth to prevent early loss, which may cause future problems with the eruption of permanent teeth. Dental cavities and traumatic injury are the main reasons for a tooth to require pulp therapy. The root canal procedure removes the infected pulp tissue within the crown of the tooth. A medication is placed to calm the nerve of the tooth and prevent bacterial growth. It is followed with a final restoration such as a filling, a zirconia crown or stainless steel crown.
Stainless steel crown
A Stainless Steel may be recommended for your child after a baby root canal is performed or if extensive damage to a baby tooth from cavities or trauma. They are recommended when a traditional filling is not considered strong enough to protect the tooth until it naturally falls out (Keep in mind that the baby molars do not fall out until 11-14 years of age). The SS crowns are silver in colour and may not be suitable for the front tooth.
Zirconia crowns
Zirconia is an extremely durable material, which means the crown can be made thinner. As a result, the dentist won’t need to remove as much tooth enamel to make room for the dental crown. The ceramic crown has a translucent appearance, which blends in with your child’s natural teeth. For teeth that are visible when your child smiles or talks, our dentist may recommend a front tooth crown made of zirconia to help them maintain a beautiful smile. However, zirconia crowns are also strong enough to be used for molars (back teeth).
Tooth extraction
Our dentists at VPD will try their best to save your child’s tooth during a dental emergency.
However, sometimes the best course of action is tooth extraction. For instance a tooth may have a large cavity that can’t be fixed with a dental filling or crown. We may advise emergency tooth extraction if the tooth is too fractured to be repaired by a dental crown or other restoration.
